Taxation Without Representation
Over the course of the last year and a half the Tea Parties have caused quite a stir. At first many in the movement found it difficult to accept that the voice of the people was largely being ignored. Hundreds…multiple thousands of citizens attended each event culminating at the September 12th Washington D.C. Rally. Millions rallied for less govern-ment and lower taxes. Despite much larger turnouts at rallies, the “pro-statists” protests drew more main stream media attention. The double standard quickly became obvious. How did this nonsense start?
Americans are busy, working 40 plus hours per week. Historic expectations have been that elected officials are working to ensure our proper representation, and that no taxation without representation or redistribution of wealth takes place. Also their service to the nation was to be given freely without a lifetime of benefits. For our limited republic to thrive and prosper requires vigilance on the part of the citizen. The Tea Party may be concerned with taxes, but it is also concerned about a real lack of representation with each and every elected position in the United States.
Working within our two party system, the tea party movement capitalizes on existing dissatisfaction with the statist’s representation where power is brokered, back room deals are cut, and pork is divided amongst the vultures.
What then do we tell our posterity? We were asleep while the country was looted from within. Eternal vigilance is the cost of freedom. That power is our power, and we permitted it slip away because we did not take an active role in our government as our Founding Fathers expected. Get involved! Come to the Southeast Michigan 9.12 Project (a Tea Party)! Only you can make a difference!
